Our Story

What began as a passion project has evolved into something more. We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited for what’s ahead.

If you know Mika and Abby, then you probably already know that they don’t really do anything small… and they definitely don’t do anything slow. When they get an idea, they tend to dive in head first and figure the rest out along the way. That’s exactly how The Wandering Local came to life.

One of the biggest reasons they wanted to start this business actually came from their involvement with the Van Buren-Spencer Chamber of Commerce. Through the Chamber, they’ve had the opportunity to meet so many hardworking business owners and watch people build amazing things right here in the community they love so much. They’ve seen firsthand how important small businesses are to this county — not just economically, but personally. They create connection, opportunity, and pride in the place we call home.

Van Buren County is such a special place to us. There is so much beauty here, so much heart here, and so many good people here. They are incredibly excited and thankful to be able to build a business right here in the heart of this county and create experiences that bring people together while also showcasing the places that make this area so unique.

Growing up, Abby’s mom always used to say, “Wherever you go, there you are.” For a long time, Abby didn’t fully understand what that meant, but the older she’s gotten, the more she’s lived by it. To us, it means that no matter where life takes you, what really matters is how you choose to show up, the energy you bring, and the way you invest in the people and places around you.

And honestly, there’s nowhere else they’d rather be investing our time, energy, and hearts than right here.

The Wandering Local was created to celebrate community, connection, beautiful places, and meaningful experiences — and this is just the beginning of that for us.
